Editing

Examples of editing:

Editing can make a massive change to the way we watch films. There are many different ways to edit clips here are some of the different ways:

Cut:

Definition: A cut is where there is a quick change from one shot to the other. It can range from many different shots. For example,  a close up to a extreme close up or a wide shot. It will always be changing.
A cut can : - Compress time.    -build up on an image.    - vary the P.O.V.    - change the scene.

Dissolve:

  • This is where there is a transition between two shots where the first image will gradually disappear while the second one takes it place.
  • A fade out and a fade in.

Wipe:

  • A transition between shots where a line will pass on the screen revealing the new image.
  • One shot will be replaced with the other shot.

Fades:

  • A fade out of one shot, then a fade in of another. The image will rapidly become black to make sure that the next scene can be followed.

Graphic Match:

  • Two shots that are connected, a strong similarity between the two images.
  • A smooth transition.

Eye-line Match:

  • The first image showing the individual that is looking at some in-particular, then an after shot of what the individual is looking at.

Superimposition:

  • An exposure of more than one image that is placed into the same film strip. It is not a fade or a dissolve is just allows one pro-former to be seen in one place then another.

Shot/Reverse shot:

  • Shots that have been edited together. This to show the two different actors perspectives looking at how one individual sees it and then the same with the other.

Iris:

  • An ending or an opening to a scene. A mask that moves around an image, bringing it out or in. To reveal an image and its detail or to close it.

Match on action:

  • Two different views of the same action together at the same time with the same movement.

Montage:

  • A high amount of images which may tell a story about an individual.
  • They may be used to compress time or to show a process of development.

Split screen:

  • This is the division between to screens, this showing different images but at the same time.
  • Used to create excitement on a certain activity.

Slow motion:

  • An action which will be slower than others. It will move at a much slower rate then it would have when it was originally taken.
